NASA's Voyager 1 spacecraft has reached the edge of our solar system.
It has taken 33 years, but the space probe has finally done it. The craft was first launched on September 5th, 1977 and 27 years later it finally reached what is called the heliosheath - the turbulent outer shell of the sun's influence. After traveling for 10.8 billion miles, Voyager 1 has reached the outer edge of the heliosheath and our solar system - the point at which the velocity of hot ionized gas radiating from the Sun (called the solar wind) has slowed to zero. Scientists believe that the solar wind in this area is turned sideways by the pressure from the interstellar wind that travels between other stars.
