The band Duran Duran took their name from a villain in the movie Barbarella.
Formed in Birmingham in 1978, Duran Duran often played gigs at a nightclub called “Rum Runner.” One of the most successful clubs in the area was called “Barbarella’s”, boasting such performers as the Sex Pistols and the Clash. Barbarella is a 1968 futuristic sci-fi film starring Bridget Fonda as its title character. In the year 40,000, Barbarella is sent to the planet Tau Ceti to track down a mad scientist who is threatening peace in the galaxy.
The villain’s name? Dr. Durand Durand. The actor that played the villain, Milo O’Shea, repaid the band for this compliment by appearing as an older version of the character in Arena, Duran Duran’s 1984 concert film. The band also played homage to the film with their single, “Electric Barbarella”, which was released in the United States back in 1997.
