The teen named America's safest driver fell asleep on the wheel and killed himself and another person!
Michael Douchette fell asleep at the wheel and killed himself and another person, after being named America’s Safest Driving Teen. 17-year old Michael Douchette was honored as the nation’s safest teen-age driver in the early 1990s. Shortly after, he fell asleep behind the wheel before his car slammed into another car, killing him and 19-year-old Sharan Ann Link.
They were both instantly pronounced dead. Douchette’s car, which he was awarded in the driving competition, drifted over the center line and struck Link’s car, the police report on the accident said. Link tried to avoid the oncoming car, but to no avail.
