There’s a resort in Finland where you sleep in a glass igloo to watch the northern lights.

Talk about a room with a few. Hotel Kakslauttanen is a first class resort in Finland. They have the world’s largest smoke sauna, equipped with its own restaurant. In the winter, they offer you a possibility to stay overnight in a traditional snow igloo or a “futuristic glass igloo,” where you can gaze up at the northern lights in a normal room temperature under the glass ceiling.

Their newest attraction is Santa’s Resort, and it’s open all year around. The resort includes Santa’s house, a tower bridge over the Gold Creek, and the Smith Elf Forge. In summer, you can even pan for gold under the direction of the selves. But to be fair, if you’re staying there, you probably have plenty of gold to spare.

Ever wondered why you feel a lump in your throat when you cry or freak out? Learn here

Whether it’s because you watched a sad movie or just got your report card, crying often makes it feel like you’ve got a lump in your throat. This lump-like sensation has to do with how the nervous system deals with stress. The part of the nervous system that deals with stress is called the autonomic nervous system.

When human being experience emotions such as grief or sorrow, the autonomic nervous system responds as it would to anger or fear by increasing the flow of oxygen throughout the body. To increase oxygen intake, the autonomic nervous system makes us breath faster, and expands a part of the throat called the glottis. Swallowing involves closing the glottis. So when we swallow while crying/freaking out, we work against the muscles that open the glottis and experience the resulting muscle tension as a lump in the throat.

Carrots haven’t been orange for that long!

Before the 17th century rolled in, almost all carrots cultivated were purple! The modern day orange carrot wasn’t even cultivated until Dutch growers in the late 16th century took mutant strains of the purple carrot, including yellow and white carrots (mutated versions of the regular purple carrot) and gradually developed them into the orange variety we have today.

It is believed that this strange desire to change the color of a vegetable was brought about the fact that the emblem of the House of Carrots was also orange. So, the orange carrot became popular in the Netherlands because it represented the struggle for Dutch independence.

It is more likely however, that the success of orange carrots had to the fact the orange carrots that the Dutch developed were sweeter and more fleshy than the purple ones.
