The US Military stopped helping production of "The Avengers" because the movie was too unrealistic.

The US Military has a long history of helping filmmakers whenever they're making movies that portray the US Military in a good light. They have helped multiple productions, not just in a consulting role, but also providing soldiers as extras, and letting filmmakers shoot on military bases.

So, it was kinda surprising that they pulled out of consulting for The Avengers. The reason they gave was that the movie was too unrealistic. You might think that they were talking about the ridiculous spandex costumes or the alien invaders. You'd be wrong. The reason the movie was too unrealistic was because of S.H.I.E.L.D., the military organization that gathers and directs The Avengers.

What they were concerned about was much more simple than the technology. It was the chain of command. It's not entirely clear who S.H.I.E.L.D. responds too, who's in charge of S.H.I.E.L.D. This is what the Hollywood liaison for the military said: To whom did SHIELD answer? Did we work for SHIELD? It just got to the point where it didn't make any sense. We hit that roadblock and decided we couldn't do anything [with the film]."

So there you have it, if you want to make a film with the aid of the US Military you should make it really clear who's really calling the shots in the military.

PSA: Statistics show that women and girls reinvest 90% of their income in their families and communities versus 30-40% for men. Learn how we can empower girls around the world.

In developing countries, the challenges that girls face are magnified by poverty. Rather than learning about their rights and how they can make a difference in the world, many girls’ voices are silenced and they have no say in major decisions that impact their lives.

Instead of going to school, making friends, and learning skills, many girls spend their time cooking, cleaning, and caring for younger siblings. When girls are given the chance to have their voices heard, they can make a positive impact on the lives of their family, their community and the world.

Girl Up is working with the United Nations to promote adolescent girl leaders by providing them with essential economic and social skills, support from mentors and with the resources they need to participate in community life. Girl Up supports UN programs that empower girls to speak out on their own behalf and engage girls in decision-making. Providing girls with leadership skills and including them in decision-making is one of the major tools to spark economic and social change.

Join the Girl Up movement at girlup.org and show your support for programs that help girls become leaders around the world!

A regular janitor turned out to be a Medal of Honor recipient!

Perhaps everyone has walked by someone working and almost completely ignored them, but what if they turned out to be one of the most decorated war heroes in all of America?

This is exactly what happened with William “Bill” Crawford. Private Crawford single handedly took out three enemy machine guns during the invasion of Salerno, Italy in World War II. All alone, Bill halted the enemy platoon’s advance and fortified his own troops position.  Unfortunately, Bill was captured and when he couldn’t be found, was declared dead. After marching over 500 miles in 52 days in a German POW camp eating only a potato a day, Bill was rescued and set free. After finishing his service and retiring as a MSG, Bill became a janitor.

He went over twenty years without being recognized until a young cadet read about him in a military history book and rekindled Bill’s fame. In fact, he gained so much recognition that President Ronald Reagan formally presented Bill with his award so many years after he had received it. Read more about William Crawford and his bravery here!

Bestiality is legal in 16 states!

One of the strangest and universally condemned acts in the world is bestiality. It is largely unique in that there is not a single culture in the world that condones it, yet it is illegal in only 34 states! While this is largely due to the outrageousness of the crime that it remains legal, there are still cases that make headlines.

Perhaps the most famous case in recent American history was the Enumclaw horse sex case in which a man’s colon was ruptured while attempting to fornicate with a horse. The man was too embarrassed to go to the hospital and soon bled to death.

6 months after this incident, Washington state passed a bill banning the practice, yet cases in other states have not been so prominent and the act remains legal!

Swedish wasn’t the official language of Sweden until 2009!

While many people think it must be common sense for Swedish to be the official language of Sweden, it wasn’t until 2009! Swedish is a North Germanic language that is extremely similar to other Scandinavian languages such as Danish and Norwegian.

Because of the prevalence of other languages, Swedish was not made official until 2009. While today most everyone speaks Swedish as at least a second language, almost as many people speak English. Almost everyone in Sweden speaks English because of the trade links established after World War II and a strong Anglo-American influence that was established.

English became a mandated course taught in schools because it was so prevalent in the country. Because it is so popular, many people called for the strengthening of Swedish, thus it was officially made the language of Sweden!
