A man pre-ordered Duke Nukem Forever a decade ago!

A man pre-ordered Duke Nukem Forever a decade ago!

Bill, a.k.a. “Slash000”, put down $10 back on August 13, 2001 in anticipation of the game’s release later that year. Little did he know that he would not play it for ten years! Due to various development issues, Duke Nukem Forever looked like it’s release would take, well...FOREVER! The game became an industry joke and synonymous with vaporware (games that are announced, but never officially released or canceled).
Fortunately, Bill was clever enough to store his preorder receipt in a black DVD case in a cool ventilated room, thereby preserving it for all those years. “It started to disintegrate when I left it out in the open,” Bill said, “and I'm going to frame it with the purchase receipt now that the game has finally arrived.” He redeemed the ancient receipt at his local GameStop on June 14th, and the $10 deduction was eventually approved...despite the fact that the original promotion was no longer in the system!

Accident Prone Street Covered in Bubble Wrap.

A street identified as being the most accident prone in the UK, has been covered in bubble wrap to help protect residents from harming themselves. Somerville Rd. in Worcester has averaged 10 insurance claims every year for the last decade, so insurance company Confused.com decided to wrap the whole street up in bubble wrap. This was all in an effort to raise safety awareness. It took 1500 square meters of bubble wrap to cover it all..

The Power Rangers were inspired by Spider-Man!

In fact, many components of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers were borrowed from Japanese Spider-Man. In the 1970s, the Japanese Toei Company produced a television show based on Marvel’s Spider-Man comics. Let’s just say the Japanese adaptation took a few liberties with the Spider-Man character. Yes, he still walked on walls and captured crooks in his webs. However, this Spider-Man didn’t swing through city streets on his webs; he had a flying car! Also, instead of going toe-to-toe with traditional Spider-Man villains, Japanese Spider-Man was busy with a new nemesis, the aptly-named “Professor Monster”. Every week, Professor Monster would create a new monster for Spider-Man to fight. The monsters would then grow to giant size, so Spider-Man would have to get into a giant robot-spaceship with a sword named Leopardon to take them down. Sound at all familiar?

Toei later went on to produce many influential series, including Super Sentai, which we know in America as Power Rangers. The robot-fighting-a-giant-monster aspect of Super Sentai was an idea that they borrowed from their Spider-Man show. You could even say that Spider-Man was the original Power Ranger!

Pretty sweet lyrics: "Yeah, yeah, yeaaaaaaah! Wow!"

There’s a 24-hour long scavenger hunt that takes place every year over the entire United States!

Tricadecathlonomania, aka “Trica”, is a very unique scavenger hunt. It starts and ends at midnight, and bribing judges, finding loopholes, and cheating in general is actually encouraged!

Scavenger hunts aren’t just for kids. In fact, they were invented in the 1930s by the notorious socialite and party-hostess Elsa Maxwell, “the hostess with the mostest”. Not only were they a way to entertain her guests, they were also a good way to stimulate them intellectually.

In related news:

DoSomething.org is having their own scavenger hunt! Sign up here before July 11 (Next Monday!) and you can participate in an 11-day long scavenger hunt where you can earn scholarships, computers or a trip to LA. The whole event is meant to raise awareness for a bunch of good causes, so you should definitely check it out!
