T.G.I. Friday’s was founded in order to help its owner meet women!

The uber-popular restaurant chain was founded by perfume salesman Alan Stillman in 1965. A bachelor, Stillman lived in a neighborhood on the east side of Manhattan that had many single ladies. However, this presented quite the dilemma for Alan, as most of the social hangouts in the area were either exclusive cocktail parties or bars that were geared toward beer-drinking males. Therefore, he took $5,000 in cash and an borrowed an additional five grand from his mother and repurposed a local NYC tavern, despite having no prior experience as a restaurateur.

Prior to the advent of T.G.I. Friday’s, four single 25-year-old girls were not going out on Friday nights, in public and with each other, to have a good time because there was honestly no such place for them to go. By seeking to recreate the familiar cocktail party experience out in public, Spillman inadvertently created the nation’s first singles bar!

Google's corporate code of conduct mentions that the company prefers dogs to cats

It turns out that Google is run by dog people! Item II, part e is the company's "Dog Policy", where they lay out the company's status as a "dog company" and warn against employees bringing cats into the office.

"Google's affection for our canine friends is an integral facet of our corporate culture. We like cats, but we're a dog company, so as a general rule we feel cats visiting our offices would be fairly stressed out."

It's right after the sections about Equal Opportunity Employment, the company's drug policy, and their commitment to a safe work environment, so clearly this is serious business.

You can survive falling from an airplane without a parachute.

Someone once survived a fall of 18,000 feet without a parachute during World War II. The best way to avoid dying after free falling 125 miles per hour is to find something other than the ground to break your fall. Spreading your arms and legs can slow down your fall a little, giving you enough time to find a good landing spot. Landing in the water is your best bet as long as water is at least 12 feet deep. Barring that, you can try to land on some trees, or something a little less hard than the ground, like the roof of an RV or a truck trailer.

Spoilers actually make reading more enjoyable.

A psychological study at UC San Diego had people read short stories with twist endings to find out what effect that “spoiling” the ending has on the experience. It turns out that readers who read a “spoiled” version of a story that has paragraphs from the end of the story first were actually able to enjoy reading the stories more. The psychologists suggested that the increased enjoyment came from the comfort of already knowing the ending, making it easier to process information.
