No one is seen smoking a cigarette in ‘Thank You For Smoking’!

Despite the title and premise of the 2005 film, there is not a single occurrence of actual smoking! The only time where a cigarette is seen being held is during a short black-and-white film that character Nick Naylor watches.

Another fun fact about the movie is that director Jason Reitman wrote letters to all of the stars in the movie explaining why they would fit their respective roles perfectly! Every person he wrote a letter to accepted and thanked his for his personal touch.

There was a freshwater lake in Louisiana that disappeared in a swirling vortex and then reappeared as a salt water lake!

Lake Peigneur in Louisiana was once a freshwater lake with 2.5 billion gallons of water. Nearby was an underground salt mine. A 14 inch drilling bit from the salt mine got stuck in the ground and the water from the lake began to pour into the drilled hole.

Underground, the 55 miners looked up to see water pouring into their mine. The water pressure was 10 times stronger than a fire hose as the water drained into the hole becoming a bigger vortex with time! All 55 miners got out safely, but as the water poured into the mine more salt was dissolved into the water.

On the surface, 11 barges and a tugboat got sucked down into the vortex. Then, the water reversed course and began flowing backward into the vortex and caused a giant waterfall to be created. Two days later 9 of the 11 barges popped up from the bottom of the lake and the lake became a saltwater lake.

Caffeine doesn’t actually give you energy

Caffeine actually stops the breakdown of energy so you have a surplus! In simple terms, ATP is what gives your body energy. Food is broken down and stored as ATP which is used as energy. When you start to feel yourself dragging, it is because you’ve used up all the ATP, because ATP cannot be stored for long term.

Caffeine blocks the signal in your body, adenosine, from binding and letting the body know you are out of energy. It tricks your body into thinking that there is energy there. The effects of the caffeine can kick in within 10 minutes and last up to 4-6 hours! That's why you crash from caffeine, when the effect runs out, your body tries to use ATP and there's none there!

There are towns in France that are considered towns that “died for France” during WWI!

Some villages in France were completely destroyed during World War I. To this day they are still legally incorporated, but 6 of the 12 are completely depopulated. They’ve been termed towns that “died for France.” They are managed by a council of 3 people and are left depopulated in honor and memory of their sacrifice.

The famous 1945 Life magazine photo “Kissing the War Goodbye” had 11 guys claiming to be the sailor!

The photo was taken by Alfred Eisenstaedt in 1945 and shows a sailor kissing a nurse in a white dress in Times Square. A week later the photo appeared in Life magazine in a 12 page spread named Victory of people all over the country celebrating Japan’s surrender in World War II.

Eisenstaedt was snapping many photos and never took the time to take down names or information of the people. So, several people came forward claiming to be the two in the picture. The kiss was spontaneous and the sailor didn’t know the nurse at all. Many years later, it was confirmed that Edith Shain was the nurse in the photo, but she died of cancer in 2010.

George Mendonca was finally confirmed as being the sailor in the photo after much analysis. His account of the story was that he and his girlfriend (later his wife) Rita and he were at the movie theater when people ran in with the good news of Japan’s surrender. George and Rita ran into the streets with everyone else and he saw the nurse walk by and kissed her.
