Historians have discovered a lead booklet that contains what may be the earliest portrait of Jesus.

The mysterious image was found buried in a secret cave outside a small village in the country of Jordan. The booklet was one of a pile of 70 undiscovered books, each made of lead and 5 to 15 pages in length. Another lead plate contains a map of ancient Jerusalem with crosses carved outside the city walls, which is why the relics are assumed to be Christian. One of the phrases found in another book appears to say “Savior of Israel” in ancient Hebrew, so perhaps the books comprise some sort of previously unknown Gospel!

These unusual artifacts are thought to have been discovered between 2005 and 2007 during a flash flood but are currently in the possession of a Bedouin trucker. Unfortunately, he owner is refusing to sell them to archaeologists because he believes they have magical properties, but he has allowed them to test a pair of small samples.

People read as much as 10% slower from a screen than from paper.

A recent study found that readers read 6.2% slower on an iBook than from a printed book. That difference jumps up to 10.7% when using a Kindle. However, the people from that same study rated their experience reading books on an iPad more highly than their experience reading on the Kindle, and they both were rated higher than the experience of reading print. And of course, iBook, Kindle, and print were all rated as much more enjoyable than reading of a standard computer screen, which most likely takes much longer than all three to read.

Marie Antoinette's daughter was technically queen of France for only 20 minutes.

Marie Thérèse of France was the only member of the royal family to survive the Reign of Terror. Her parents, King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, were beheaded at the guillotine, and her younger brother, Louis XVII, died of complications due to imprisonment at the age of 10. Soon after her release, Marie Thérèse married her cousin Louis Antoine, the Duke of Angoulême. With the death of his uncle, Louis XVIII, in 1824, Louis Antoine became the heir to the throne and his father, Charles X, became king. Charles was forced to relinquish the throne just six years later during Les Trois Glorieuses, the French Revolution of 1830. It is said that his son, who was now technically King Louis XIX, spent 20 minutes listening to Marie Thérèse begging him not to sign the document relinquishing his claim to the throne. Many historians do not account for the "reign" of King Louis XIX and Queen Marie Thérèse due to its extreme brevity. Of course, Louis XIX eventually did sign the document, and he and the rest of the royal family spent the remainder of their days in exile.

Most Americans are on Facebook.

A survey from Edison Research concluded that 51% of Americans aged 12 and up are now using Facebook. What’s amazing about this statistic is not just the number of people using Facebook, but also the rapid growth the company has made. A similar survey just 3 years ago found that only 8% of Americans were on Facebook. The surveyors attribute much of this growth to the advent of Facebook for smartphones, but I bet that the real game changer must have been Facebook for Dummies.
