Mario Party 8 was immediately recalled from store shelves in the UK for containing the word ‘spastic’.

Mario Party 8 was immediately recalled from store shelves in the UK for containing the word ‘spastic’.

Upon the game’s debut for Wii on July 13th, 2007, Nintendo issued a recall of all copies of the game due to a “production error”. As it turns out, this error meant that the wrong version of the game was released, with the word ‘spastic’ as a part of its script. At one point in the gameplay, the blue wizard named Kamek recites this spell: "Magikoopa magic! Turn the train spastic! Make this ticket tragic!"

We here in the U.S. rarely interpret this word in a pejorative sense; we typically associate the words “spaz” or “spazzing out” with instances of over-excitement or hyperactivity. However, in England spastic is considered to be a highly offensive way to refer to the disabled. The derogatory term was soon replaced with the word ‘erratic’, and the 8th iteration of the Mario Party series made its way back to British retailers on August 3rd.

Ice isn’t slippery.

Ice is a solid. Even though you may slip when you walk on ice, your feet technically aren’t slipping on the ice, per se. A solid making contact with another solid (in this case, your foot and the ice) will make friction, so slipping shouldn’t occur.

Water is an unusual chemical in that its molecules move further apart from each other when they reach freezing temperature. Unlike most chemicals that get more dense as the temperature drops and they become solid, water is more dense in liquid form than in solid form (ice).

When you step on ice, you’re forcing the water molecules together. This forces the ice to return to a more dense state, liquid water. When you slip on ice, you’re actually slipping on the liquid water you just turned the solid ice into. Unlike solids, liquids are slippery.

There’s an entire country with WiFi everywhere!

In 2003, Niue became the world's first "WiFi nation", where free wireless Internet access is provided throughout the country by The Internet Users Society-Niue. People in Niue can get online without having to sign up with an Internet provider. This is particularly advantageous compared to using underground copper when you consider Niue’s climate conditions. The saltwater, rain, and humidity could cause problems if they weren’t all hooked up to WiFi. Also, tourists on yachts can connect to the WiFi from their on-board computers.

Today's Facebook users change their profile pictures 3 times as often as they did in 2006.

The average user in 2011 uploads 18 photos every year for their Facebook profile. That number has been steadily rising every year, since 2006 when the average was only 6 per year. And since Facebook started keeping track of which photos we use as profile photos, the average user has used 26 Facebook profile pictures in their lifetime. Women change their profile pictures more often than men (about once every 2 weeks, vs once every 3 weeks).

It’s a great way to search, edit, and aggregate Facebook photos, and there are a bunch of cool infographics on the Pixable website where you can learn more facts like these.
