The authors of The Lord of the Rings and The Chronicles of Narnia were good friends.

The authors of The Lord of the Rings and The Chronicles of Narnia were good friends.

In fact, J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis became friends long before either man had become famous! Their initial meeting in 1931 would prove to have a direct influence on both their literary careers and the rest of their lives. The two men went out with a third companion for a late-night stroll around Oxford’s campus which developed into an argument about religion that nearly lasted until morning. In addition to teaching at Oxford, the pair had several shared interests, including Anglo-Saxon verse, Icelandic sagas, and a general love of the culture of “the North.”

Their friendship really took off a year later when Tolkien invited Lewis to join a literary group known as “the Coalbiters.” The group got together every week to read Icelandic epics in the original Old Norse language. These meetings inevitably led to a perusal of Tolkien’s pet writing projects by Lewis, and vice versa. The timing could not have been much better, as both men were experiencing sweeping self-doubts about their respective writing abilities at the time, and may have otherwise kept their writing a private hobby. Tolkien having a hand in Lewis’s return to Christianity bore its fruit in the Narnia series, and in return, Lewis prodded Tolkien relentlessly until he completed The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.

It could easily be said that neither author would have earned the reputation they have today if not for their shared friendship. But did you know that J.R.R. Tolkien even based one of his characters on C.S. Lewis? Treebeard, the leader of the walking trees known as “Ents,” shares many of Lewis’s mannerisms, such as a booming voice and a constant throat-clearing habit. The deep camaraderie the duo shared is probably best summarized in a letter from Tolkien to his daughter following Lewis’s death in 1963: "So far I have felt the normal feelings of a man my age -- like an old tree that is losing all its leaves one by one: this feels like an axe-blow near the roots."

There is only one set of lyrics that rhymes in Rebecca Black’s “Friday.”

Unless you want to count rhyming words with themselves like "front seat" and "back seat," the only rhyme in the entire song occurs in the line “Gotta have my bowl, gotta have cereal.” (in reality, it's kind of a half-rhyme at best, but we're being generous here). That’s it. Including the rap section. Would you have expected anything more? Check the lyrics to see for yourself.

And despite what some of our visitors have been telling, the video is still on YouTube. Also, for a limited time you can click the "1911" button to make it a lot better. Better yet, make sure to check out this surreal Bob Dylan-style cover instead:

Colombian sports fans brought their friend's dead body and coffin to a soccer match.

Christopher Jacome, a 17-year-old Colombian soccer fan, was tragically gunned down while playing his beloved sport. After his funeral wake, a group of friends carried him and his coffin to the local soccer stadium to catch one final match! Cucuta Deportivo, Christopher’s favorite team, was playing on that day. Hundreds of people stormed the gates and overwhelmed stadium officials, who apparently let the coffin through with little resistance. Though Jacome’s death did not directly was not directly related to soccer, it’s pretty cool that his buddies decided to honor his memory in this way...though I wouldn’t recommend repeating this stunt to anyone.

Kelly Slater is both the youngest and oldest person to be crowned World Surfing Champion.

Slater won his first Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) title at the age of 20 and was crowned world champion most recently this past November at the ripe old age of 38! The American surfing legend’s professional career started off with a bang when he won championships in 7 of his first 8 seasons. All in all, he has earned a record 10 world championships and a total of 44 tour wins, also a record. This is even more impressive when you consider that Slater took a two-year hiatus from surfing competition from 1999-2001!

You can read the ESPN article about his most recent crown here.

Mark Zuckerberg changed his relationship status on Facebook after 7 years of dating.

Zuckerberg has been with his girlfriend, Priscilla Chan, since he was in college, and he only now finally updated his relationship status. Strangely enough, the founder and owner of Facebook has traditionally kept a very limited profile for himself. Most users were barred by the privacy settings from seeing more than a picture and a list of friends. Lately, Zuck has been opening up more to the public with his profile. He now posts his relationship status, has a list of his family members, and has pictures of himself with his dog.

For some reason Forbes has been covering this story extensively.
