The day after they lost the NBA Championship, the Miami Herald ran an ad congratulating the Miami Heat for winning!

The day after they lost the NBA Championship, the Miami Herald ran an ad congratulating the Miami Heat for winning!

In fact, the ad from Macy’s selling Heat championship memorabilia saying “Congratulations Miami” ran on the same page as a story describing how the Heat lost to the Dallas Mavericks. A representative from the Herald explained that it is common practice for newspapers to prepare ads like these (ones based on the outcome of sporting events) ahead of time, just to cover their bases. This way, the ads can come out on time, instead of waiting for the game to be over before they start working on it. In this case, the ad went out on accident. Still, even if the Heat did win on Sunday, they still would have needed to win another game to clinch the title.

Sylvester Stallone was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame even though he’s not actually a boxer!

However, the Rocky actor was asked to box one of his fellow inductees! About a decade ago, he was asked to fight Mike Tyson in an exhibition bout for charity. Stallone’s response? “Sure, as long as the charity would be for my life support.” Though not an actual fighter, you would have never realized it with the reception Sly received from the 7,000-plus that showed up for the event!

Though he never really sparred with those larger-than-life opponents on the silver screen, Stallone has done quite a bit to advance the sport’s popularity. He wrote, directed, and starred in 5 of the 6 Rocky films, with the only exceptions being the first and fifth films, which were directed by John G. Avildsen. Appropriately enough, Sylvester’s closed his induction speech with the famous line, “Yo Adrian, I did it!” This just leaves us to wonder if the actor that portrayed Ivan Drago will be ineligible for the Hall of Fame due to his onscreen character’s steroid usage.

Update: Jason Terry was RIGHT!

Dallas Mavericks guard Jason Terry was so confident his team would reach the NBA Finals this year, he had the trophy tattooed on his body before the season began! A day before a preseason game against the Magic, Terry’s teammate DeShawn Stevenson had a team gathering at his house in Orlando. In an attempt to build camaraderie between his teammates, he even invited both his own personal chef and his tattoo artist! Terry then proceeded to do the unimaginable - he got the Larry O’Brien championship trophy etched on his right bicep! All his teammates thought he was crazy at the time, even Stevenson, but Terry had a funny feeling that this year’s team was destined for great things.

It turns out he was right, as the Mavs just defeated the Miami Heat 105-95 to clinch the NBA Championship! The series is a rematch of the 2006 NBA Finals, in which the Mavericks were defeated by the Heat. Terry and Dirk Nowitzki are the only two players who remain from that year’s squad. Making good on his word, Jason had a large impact on the final game of the series, scoring 24 points off the bench!

Two brand-new elements have been added to the periodic table!

The two elements are radioactive and only exist for less than a second before decaying into lighter substances. Elements 114 and 116 were discovered in 1999 and 2000, respectively, and are the heaviest known elements thus far. The two substances currently sport the temporary names of ‘ununquadium’ and ‘ununhexium’, but new monikers have been proposed based upon the Russian physicists that discovered them. Element 114 may eventually be named ‘flerovium’ after its founder, Georgy Flyorov, and the name ‘moscovium’ has been proposed for Element 116, after Russia’s Moscow region. Elements 113, 115, and 118 were also considered but did not fulfill all the qualifications for element-hood.

President Obama was known as ‘Barry O’bomber’ in high school!

This nickname was on account of Barack’s jump shot on the basketball court. In his senior year, Obama used these hoops skills to help his high school team to a 60-28 victory in the 1979 Hawaii State Championship! During Punahou High’s massive victory, Obama missed a free throw and scored a layup in the game’s closing minutes. The future president was never a superstar, but he did have something in common with the game’s greatest player - Barack Obama wore the number 23 two years before Michael Jordan’s freshman year at the University of North Carolina!
