Women in an Indonesian tribe sharpen their teeth as a fashion statement!

Females in the Mentawai tribe of West Sumatra take great ‘pains’ to make themselves look attractive. You think shaving your legs and wearing makeup is bad? Try sharpening your teeth to a point and getting tattooed by being hammered on with a needle! They do admit the processes are painful, but such is the price of beauty within their culture.

You can see the Mentawai women here on Youtube:

A wasabi-based smoke alarm has been developed for deaf people!

Since a traditional alarm obviously would not be able to be heard by a deaf person, the Japanese have created a smoke alarm that targets the sense of smell! In the presence of smoke, this unorthodox safety device releases a chemical called allyl isothiocyanate into the air. This chemcial compound is what gives condiments such as wasabi, mustard, and horseradish their strong taste and smell. In subject tests, the device managed to wake up nearly all sleeping individuals within two and a half minutes! The design was later tweaked to wake people up without causing a burning sensation in their eyes.

Weird Al Yankovic was valedictorian of his high school class.

The fact that Al is a smart guy comes as no surprise - he has a way with words rarely seen before in the world of parody. What makes this feat even more impressive is that Yankovic was actually two years younger than most of his classmates. This is because Al entered kindergarten a year early and later skipped second grade (‘weird’...i know.)! Despite the fact that the majority of his peers were two years his senior, Al managed straight A’s throughout high school, partially because he had no interest in sports or social events.

Los Angeles Lakers star, Ron Artest, is petitioning to change his name 'Metta World Peace'

If you're wondering about the "Metta" part, it's a Buddhist reference. The word has a lot of meanings, including "friendliness" and "benevolence".

Here's a video of the infamous Pacers-Pistons brawl in 2004. At around 1:40 you can see Mr. World Peace jump into the stands and punch a fan in the face.

The Green Bay Packers got their name in 1919 after the Indian Packing Company gave the team $250 to buy equipment.

The Indian Packing Company later became the “Acme Packing Company”, so for a while, the team’s jerseys said “ACME PACKERS”.

More fun Packer facts: you CANNOT buy Packers stock. The entirety of the team’s stock is owned by 111,507 stockholders, they won’t sell anymore, and the current stockholders are not allowed to resell them. Also, the Packers don’t have an official cheerleading squad. During home games, cheerleaders from the nearby colleges show up instead.

You can learn more suprising info about the Packers from the FAQ section on their site. One strange omission is an explanation of their name. When asked for the origin story of the name, all the site gives you is a link that redirects to the team’s merchandise store. We had to go to Wikipedia to get to the bottom of that mystery.
