George Lucas and Steven Spielberg are responsible for 7 of the top 10 highest-grossing films of the 1980s.

Not only that, but they are also responsible for 4 of the top 5 films of that decade! The seven films include: E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Star Wars Episodes V & VI, and the Indiana Jones trilogy. Spielberg also produced Back to the Future. Lucas began the decade with the completion of The Empire Strikes Back (1980), his first Star Wars sequel, and then collaborated with Spielberg on a new project called Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), which was released the following year. Spielberg then moved on to direct what would be the most financially successful film of the decade, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982), while Lucas completed his Star Wars trilogy with the release of Return of the Jedi (1983). The next year, the pair got back together for the Raiders prequel Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984), before Spielberg signed on as executive producer of Back to the Future (1985). This ended their streak of rabid success for a couple of years. Lucas produced a couple of forgettable TV shows about Droids and Ewoks, and Spielberg directed a pair of less lucrative films. The honeymoon was not over just yet, though - the dynamic duo reunited to sneak one final blockbuster to close out the decade with Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989).

Here's a list of the top 10 films of every decade.

The word “Mafia” is not uttered once in The Godfather.

The first rule of the Mafia: don’t talk about the Mafia. Despite the fact that the entire movie is about the exploits of an Italian family crime syndicate, this familiar label is never applied to their dealings. If you find the lack of this five-letter M word in the film to be bizarre, you are right. The reason the word is never spoken is because the Italian-American Civil Rights League requested that “Mafia” and “Cosa Nostra” be removed from the film’s script! In retrospect, I think this makes The Godfather even cooler - it’s like the one word that could best sum up the entire film is considered to be taboo among its characters.

You can still find a healthy dose of racial slurs, however - the 1972 Best Picture does not shy away from the usage of potentially offensive words such as “greaser,” “wop,” “dago,” and “guinea.”

It is illegal to kill a Sasquatch.

Disclaimer: This is a rare case in which a “dumb law” submitted to our site is actually based on fact and not pulled out of thin air. 99.99% of the time we ignore these, so please don’t send any more of them unless you can prove that they are true.

Despite the fact that the existence of bigfoot has never been proven, there are actual laws against killing it. Specifically, Skamania County in Washington state has had an ordinance against killing Sasquatch since 1969, and Whatcom County, also in Washington state, passed a resolution against killing Sasquatch in 1992. Why do this? Well, in addition to the fact that Sasquatch, if it really exists, would be an endangered species, there are also public safety considerations. People can easily be confused for the legendary creature from a distance, so letting bigfoot-hunters run around your neighborhood would probably be a bad idea.

Here’s a list of Skamania County ordinances, which includes the “Sasquatch Protection” ordinance.

And here’s a resolution declaring Whatcom County a “Sasquatch Refuge and Protection Area”.

Thanks to Courthouse Libraries for clearing this up.

Michael J Fox's middle name is actually Andrew.

Michael’s first American role came in the 1979 made-for-TV movie Letters From Frank. For this film, he was credited using his given name: “Michael Fox.” Fox had planned on continuing to use this name until it came time for him to register with the Screen Actors Guild. The Guild does not allow for identical names to be entered more than once (to reduce confusion), and Fox found that a “Michael Fox” had already been registered. For this reason, he had to think of a new name for himself. He briefly considered going by his middle name but did not like the sound of “Andrew Fox” or “Andy Fox.” Therefore, he simply chose a new middle initial - “J” - an homage to actor Michael J. Pollard...this guy.
