Directors were required to shoot all of John Wayne's scenes before noon!
John Wayne has become the posterboy for cowboys and all things that were manly, despite having some terrible living habits. Let's face it, Wayne was a chain smoker ever since he was a young man, and he was also a functioning alcoholic - but he was still able to make the greatest Western movies of all time.
Filmmakers were aware of Wayne's drinking problem, and were told to shoot his scenes before noon because by the time the afternoon came around, he was througholy intoxicated and was a 'mean drunk'.
This piece of advice to directors came from Sam O'Steen's memoir, Cut to the Chase. O'Steen was a veteran filmmaker and a long time associate with Wayne before passing away in 2000.
