About the Site

OMG Facts was originally a Twitter account created by 16-year-old Adorian Deck in September 2009. At various times throughout the day, Adorian would tweet random facts he'd discovered. Within four months, the account had reached 300,000 followers and was being followed by celebrities.

In the meantime, Gaby Montero and Emerson Spartz, founders of GivesMeHope, were inspired by OMG Facts to create a facts site and saw several opportunities. Their first observation: what about people who don't use Twitter? Second, they thought there must be a better way to choose which facts to publish than the unscientific method Adorian used on Twitter.

With help from fellow Notre Dame alumni John Culkin ('03), Gaby and Emerson had spent the second half of 2009 modifying GivesMeHope's script to ensure that the best stories were published on the home page.

Then they had an idea - use GivesMeHope's user-moderation system and create a facts site that ensures ONLY the most interesting facts get published. They built the site, gave it a ridiculous name, and were about to launch. Then, they decided to talk to Adorian to see if it made sense to partner up and name the site OMG Facts. He liked the idea of expanding OMG Facts, and the site was launched shortly after.

Here is a simplified explanation of how it works:

When a user submits a fact, it gets entered into a queue. Fact lovers vote Yes or No on each fact on the 'Vote on Upcoming Facts' page.

After 7 days, the facts with the most yes votes are submitted to our staff. Each fact is then researched and fact-checked thoroughly. If it is found to be true, extra interesting background info is added and the fact is published on the home page.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you pick the facts?
When you submit a fact, it's entered into a queue. Our visitors then vote 'Yes' or 'No' on the 'Upcoming Facts page'. After 7 days, the facts with the most yes votes are submitted to the staff. We publish them in the home page if they are verifiable and original.

How do I know if a fact is real?
We verify if a fact is true, and provide extra information for each fact we post. We apply the strictest scrutiny to every fact before we put it up; nothing goes up that we don't think is accurate, and that doesn't have any legitimate support to back it up. Lots of facts get submitted every day that never make it on the front page because they don't make it past our rigorous fact-checking process.

What sources are you using to verify the facts?
We try to use the most legitimate sources we can find to verify our facts: video evidence, newspapers, scientific journals, dictionaries, Wikipedia, and credible fact-check sites like Snopes, HowStuffWorks and FactCheck.org. Sometimes we even test the facts out ourselves.
