The Pentagon has successfully tested a hypersonic flying bomb that can strike any target in the world within an hour!

In November 2011, the Pentagon successfully launched a bomb that travels faster than the speed of sound. It'll give military planners the ability to strike any place in the world within an hour. It is called the “Advanced Hypersonic Weapon” or AHW. The launch site was in Hawaii and the bomb flew to its strike zone in the Marshall Islands. The bomb flew 2,500 miles southwest of Hawaii altogether.

Unlike a ballistic missile, this bomb is maneuverable. Scientifically, hypersonic speed is defined as exceeding mach 5 speeds, which is five times the speed of sound, or 3,728 miles an hour. The test shot was aimed to gather data on aerodynamics, navigation, guidance and control, and thermal protection technologies. 

The AHW is part of the U.S. Army's “Prompt Global Strike” program that aims to create weapons that can strike anywhere in the world within an hour. It cost about 69 million to launch the AHW last November.
