The two elements are radioactive and only exist for less than a second before decaying into lighter substances. Elements 114 and 116 were discovered in 1999 and 2000, respectively, and are the heaviest known elements thus far. The two substances currently sport the temporary names of ‘ununquadium’ and ‘ununhexium’, but new monikers have been proposed based upon the Russian physicists that discovered them. Element 114 may eventually be named ‘flerovium’ after its founder, Georgy Flyorov, and the name ‘moscovium’ has been proposed for Element 116, after Russia’s Moscow region. Elements 113, 115, and 118 were also considered but did not fulfill all the qualifications for element-hood.
