Baseball player Richie Ashburn, in August 1957, hit a fan with a foul ball. A few minutes later, he hit the same fan again while she was being taken out on a stretcher.
The foul ball struck spectator Alice Roth, wife of sports editor Earl Roth, breaking her nose. When play resumed, Ashburn fouled off another ball that struck her while in the stretcher. Ashburn and Roth would maintain a friendship for many years and her son later served as a Phillies batboy.
