This is unlikely to work on more modern equipment, but a failing old hard drive on a computer that won’t start can be temporarily fixed by making it really cold. When the hard drive is making a clicking sound and won’t spin, you can try putting it into a ziplock bag in the freezer. The longer you leave it in the freezer, the more time you can use your hard drive when you plug it back in to your computer. A few hours in the freezer can get you a few extra minutes, hopefully enough time to retrieve your files, if they haven’t been corrupted.
