Male and female giant pandas prefer different habitats.

Both sexes of panda enjoy high altitude forests where bamboo is plentiful. They each tend to avoid both the taller peaks where bamboo is scarcer and the lower areas where people tend to be found. However, it has recently been discovered that female pandas are much more picky about the kind of living areas they prefer. While males tend to roam freely and can live basically anywhere depending on the amount of food they can find, their mates prefer conifer and mixed forests on steeper mountain slopes. This is because these sorts of locations lend themselves well both to potential dens where they can safely give birth and areas of thick bamboo cover under which their offspring can safely play undetected or hide.
