It's because of the color of Scar's mane. The mane in each adult lion is a telling sign of its strength and sexual maturity. The fuller and darker a Lion's mane is the more attractive it is to the lionesses.
A dark and full mane in a lion indicates:

- Fighting success in mate to male combat
- Longer reproductive lives
- Higher offspring survival
