The moon smells like gunpowder!

It is an interesting thought of how one can smell the moon. Astronauts in 2006 had many things to say about their trip to the moon. Moon dust is soft like snow, but yet abrasive. Astronaut Gene Cernan said the moon dust smelled of spent gunpowder. How do you smell it, though?

They have their space suit on, so it is kind of impossible to smell the stuff. Correct. However, moon dust is very clingy and astronauts track some of it inside their space shuttle after walking on the moon. Try as they might, they can never shake all of the dust off before reentering the cabin. 

Once their helmets are off, they can actually feel, smell, and even taste the moon. One of the astronauts on the 2006 space odyssey, Jack Schmitt, actually got the first recorded extraterrestrial hay fever. When he took off his helmet, he had a strong reaction to the moon dust and the cartilage plates inside of his nose began to swell.

His body built up a type of immunity to the dust, though, because with each moonwalk, the symptoms lessened.
