The average woman does NOT swallow 6 pounds of lipstick during her lifetime.

This "fact" is all over the Internet, with varying amounts of lipstick consumed by a typical female (from about 3 pounds to as much as 10 pounds). When you think about it, the idea of a woman consuming POUNDS of lipstick is absurd! A tube of lipstick weighs about 3 grams; that makes 151.2 tubes for every pound. For a woman to consume 3 pounds, it take 454 tubes. 10 pounds would be about 1512!

Snopes.com tested a typical tube of lipstick and found that 3 grams translates into about 410 lip applications. Consuming 3-10 pounds would require 186,140 to 619,920 lifetime lip applications! If you spread this out over 55 years of lipstick use (from about the ages 15 to 70), that would have women applying their lipstick anywhere from 9 to 31 times a day. EVERY day. Even when they have no reason to wear makeup. These would have to be FULL reapplications, with ALL of the lipstick being consumed, and NONE of it left on a cup or kissed away. This would also mean that the typical woman purchases 8 to 27 lipstick tubes a year and uses the ENTIRE tube every time. You can see why this rumor is more than a bit outlandish. We're sure that women consume quite a bit of lipstick whether they realize it or not, but the idea that this amount is anything but negligible is preposterous.
