There is an uncontacted tribe in Brazil with only one surviving member.
They first became aware of him around fifteen years ago. Since then, they’ve launched numerous expeditions to track him, ensure his safety, and to try and establish peaceful contact with him. In 2007, government officials declared a 31 square mile area around him to be off limits to trespassing and development.
It might seem strange that Brazil’s government is making such an effort to preserve this man’s way of life instead of absorbing him into their world. The idea behind it is that they want integration into society to be his choice.
Relations with the man, however, have been very difficult. When he was first discovered, it was found out that he made small huts and never stayed in one place once found, always moving on to a new hut.
The huts also had rectangular holes inside of them, rectangular and five feet deep, serving no apparent purpose. Once he was found, it was discovered that he was in his mid thirties, and always armed with a bow and arrow. Every encounter with him ended in frustration or tragedy.
He once shot a man in the chest with an arrow when things got too out of hand for him. It is believed that he is the last survivor of a tribe that was either chased off or killed following Brazil’s 1988 constitution that stated natives had the legal right to the land they occupied.
This incentivized people to chase them off or kill them for land development, which could explain his hostile nature towards outsiders.
