The Big Lebowski spawned a religion.

It is called Dudeism, and is sometimes referred to as a mock religion. If you’ve seen The Big Lebowski, that’s probably your analysis too. But its founder and many followers regard it as real. Its objective is to promote a lifestyle consistent with Chinese Taoism, blended with concepts by Greek philosopher Epicurus, and personified by The Dude from the 1998 film The Big Lebowski.

It was founded in 2005 by Oliver Benjamin, a journalist living in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Dudeism’s official name is The Church of the Latter Day Dude. Its website says over 150,000 Dudeist Priests had been ordained by 2012 (which is free for anyone to do online). Dudeists say that the worldview of Dudeism has existed since civilization began and is only characterized by The Dude.

Examples like Budda, Epicurus, and even Jesus are listed as references to back up the statement. More recent examples, Dudeists claim, are those like Ralph Waldo Emerson, Walt Whitman, Mark Twain, and Henry David Thoreau. Dudeism is highly active today. You can check out the website here
