Over 5,000 bodies have been recovered from the bottom of Niagara!

Since 1850, officials at Niagara Falls have kept records of how many bodies they actually recover, and their number has gone over 5,000! Of that number, it’s difficult to say how many were intentional.

On a yearly basis, Niagara gets about a dozen suicides from people trying to die by going over the waterfall. Some change their minds when it is too late, and rescue teams attempt to save whoever they can. Oftentimes, for those who die it is unclear whether their death was a suicide attempt or an attempt to be famous.

Many people make the attempt to get instant fame by being a survivor of the great Niagara Falls. Of twenty-one people who are recorded as Niagara Falls dare devils, sixteen survived and five died.

Not bad odds, but not quite good enough for the average person. Steven Trotter and David Munday attempted the feat of going over Niagara twice without dying. Most-likely the youngest survivor of the falls was 7 year-old Roger Woodward.

In 1960, the boat he was in with James Honeycutt flipped over and both went over the falls. Honeycutt died, but little Woodward survived in just a life preserver!
