Its name comes from New York’s nickname, Empire State. It stood as the world’s tallest building for 40 years. In 1971 when the World Trade Center north tower was completed, it became the tallest building.
Upon its demise, the Empire State Building became the tallest building in New York once again. Then, the One World Trade Center was completed in April 2012, and the Empire State Building became the second tallest building in New York.
The Empire State Building has been names one of the seven wonders of the modern world. Over time, more than thirty people have committed suicide by jumping from the top of the building.
