The 1960 Valdiva earthquake or the Great Chilean Earthquake is the most powerful earthquake ever recorded on Earth, rating 9.5 on the moment magnitude scale. The death records show that up to 6000 people may have been killed as a result of the quake. However, one of these deaths may have been avoided.
In the coastal village Collieufu, native Lafkenchlpes demanded the sacrifice of the grandson of one Juan Painecur, in order to calm the earth and the ocean. The victim, 5 year old Jose Luis Painecur, had his arms and legs severed by his own grandfather, and was stuck into the sand of the beach like a stake. The two men involved in participating in the boy’s murder were released in 2 years. A tragedy following a tragedy.
