China's Guangdong province eats about 10,000 cats every day!

Guangdong is a southern province of China. In Guangdong, cat meat is considered an excellent food source. Civet cats were considered a delicacy at one point, until the consumption of civet cats was forbidden because it was believed that Civet cats had spread SARS to humans.

SARS is severe acute respiratory syndrome and it killed 774 people between November 2003 and July 2004. More recently than the news about Civet cats, was the news that Guangdong ate about 10,000 cats per day and that these cats were killed in inhumane ways. The most common way of preparing cat was to skin it and cook it alive. In Beijing, people were horrified and cried out in defense of the cats.

While eating cats and dogs is fairly common in several Asian countries, animal lovers in China were horrified. One woman was horrified to find that the same streets cats she fed were the one being picked up by cat sellers and taken to Guangdong to be eaten.

The fatter cats were the ones taken by traders for their meat, so by feeding the street cats she was probably fattening them up for the traders’ customers! There has been a huge increase of cats as pets in China, which probably explains why people have become concerned about cats’ treatment.
