A city in Texas changed its name to DISH in all capitals to advertise for DISH Network!

A town established in 2000 by Landis Clark, named Clark in Denton County, Texas formally changed its name in 2005 to DISH. Landis Clark served as the town’s first mayor and was beaten by one vote in 2005.

The town decided to change the name to DISH when Dish Network made a commercial advertisement offer to change their name. The residents, all 218 of them, received free Dish satellite for ten years and a free DVR.

At the city counsel meeting where they voted on the matter, only 12 people showed up to vote and there was no opposition. In 2006, The Daily Show produced a segment on the town of DISH.

The 2010 documentary Gasland visited DISH to uncover the hidden pollution and contamination caused by the natural gas industry. A former mayor said he was forced to move away from DISH after his sons began getting nose bleeds that he says was from fracking. A study done later said that there wasn’t sufficient contamination to cause residents to become ill.
