The Taliban is an Islamic military and political group that ran Afghanistan from 1996 until 2001. During their reign, though, only 3 nations recognized them. The country was under the strictest version of Sharia law ever during Taliban rule. They brutally repressed women.
Many of the Taliban’s rulers were of the Pashtun tribe, which was the largest ethnic group within Afghanistan. After the September 11, 2001 attacks on the U.S., the Taliban was overthrown through Operation Enduring Freedom.
