Most of what we know about pirates comes from a single primary source! A

General History of the Robberies and Murders of the Most Notorious Pyrates was written in 1724 and published in Britain. The author, Captain Charles Johnson, is thought to be a pseudonym. Many historians have worked to discover the true identity of the book’s author.

The book is the primary source for the biographies of several well-known pirates. It has shaped the contemporary view of what a pirate is, with peg legs and eye patches. Lately, some historians think a man named Nathaniel Mist is the author of the book. He was a former sailor turned journalist and publisher.

The book’s first publisher’s office was just yards from Mist’s home and had published books for Mist before. He was very capable of writing the book. The accounts seemed mystical and highly embellished, but through the years, many of the tales from the two volume book have been found to be quite accurate.
