During WW I sauerkraut was renamed Liberty Cabbage!

During both World War I and World War II, anti-German sentiments were at all time highs. So much so that anything that had any remote affiliation with Germany was automatically denounced. 

Sauerkraut is a finely shredded cabbage that is believed to have originated in China nearly 2,000 years ago and was brought over to Europe by Genghis Khan 1,000 years later. The Tartars carried it in their saddlebags throughout Europe and it took root in Eastern European countries becoming a staple cuisine of German dishes. 

Sauerkraut has been popular in America for a while. However, during the wars, manufactures feared people wouldn’t buy their product if it had any link with Germany and so they renamed it “Liberty Cabbage.” In fact, anything German carried such negative connotations that the word “Kraut” became a derogatory term for Germans!
