Children in the Middle Ages started training to be knights by age 7.

A knight was typically a member of the nobility. The decision for a boy to become a knight was typically made by the boy’s parents. Children start working toward becoming knights at a very young age. The first step is to become a page. Boys move out of their parents’ house at the age of 7, and live in a noble’s castle as a servant. From age 7 to 14, pages work as domestic servants for their master, while also receiving an education in how to ride a horse and fight.

After 7 years of service, the page becomes a squire. The squire learns about Chivalry and accompanies knights on the battlefield. Only after 7 years of this can the squire finally become a knight, at the age of 21.
