A 5 year old girl cut the ribbon at a bridge opening. 88 years later, she headed the ceremony to close it!
In 1923, Portsmouth, New Hampshire's Memorial Bridge opened when Eileen Foley, a local five-year-old girl, cut the ribbon at an opening ceremony. Nothing lasts forever, and in Fall 2011 the bridge was closed in a ceremony where two ribbon ends were tied together- by 93-year-old Eileen Foley!
The bridge opened in 1923 in honor of the sailors and soldiers of New Hampshire who fought in World War I. Foley says she still remembers the August day when she cut the original ribbon.
