Wedding cake was originally thrown at the bride!

This odd ritual dates back to medieval times and was done to symbolize the bride's fertility. Stranger still, all the baked goods at the wedding reception were traditionally thrown together in a pile and the newlyweds had to attempt to kiss over the food heap. Managing to pull this stunt off meant that they had guaranteed themselves a lifetime of good fortune together. In the 1600s, a visiting French chef was horrified by the undignified piling custom and proposed a steadier alternative technique in which the cake itself was stacked, using sawed-off broom handles. However, this more modern practice did not catch on for another 200 years!
