Voldemort means "flight of death" in French.
According to Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling, the proper pronunciation of the Dark Lord's name is also consistent with French: "vol-duh-mor" (with a silent 'T'). Rowling jokes that she says "Voldemor," but she's the only one. "Mal foy" also translates to literally mean "bad faith" in French!
