The voice actor of Gargamel and Tigger also designed and built the first artificial heart.
Paul Winchell was ventriloquist, voice actor, comedian, inventor, and humanitarian, who voiced most notably Gargamel from The Smurfs and Tigger from Winnie the Pooh. Despite his career in entertainment, Winchell had actually had medical training as a pre-med at Columbia University. With the help of Dr. Henry Heimlich, the inventor of the Heimlich Maneuver, he was the first person to build and patent a mechanical artificial heart.
Shortly after his invention was patented, The University of Utah developed a similar device, but could not patent it. Winchell then donated the heart to the university. You can read more about his impressive resume here.
