The Simpsons episode where Bart wins an elephant was based on a real incident.
In the season five Simpsons episode “Bart Gets an Elephant,” Bart wins a radio contest and picks an elephant named Stampy over $10,000 as his prize. This was a parody of an actual event that happened on the original 1956 version of The Price is Right. A contestant had won a grand piano, and an elephant was offered as a “bonus prize” for “extra ivory.”
This was a joke, as the real prize was $4,000. The contestant, however, wanted the elephant over the $4,000 and wouldn't budge. Ultimately, he got his wish, and a live elephant from Kenya was given to him.
This is hardly the most out-there prize someone has won on The Price is Right. Others include a Ferris wheel, an airplane, a submarine, and even a private island. What's the most outrageous prize you've heard of on game shows? Tell us in the comments!
