The last widow of the Civil War died in 2008!

Maudie Cecilia Hopkins died at the age of 93 in 2008. She was one of the last known Civil War widows and lived in Arkansas. Maudie began helping an elderly Civil War veteran as a teenager doing household chores for him. As his health continued to decline, he asked her to move in, and when she wouldn’t for reasons of propriety, he asked her to marry him.

She was a teenager and he was 87 years old when they married in 1934. They were married for three years before he passed away. She married after he passed and had children. It wasn’t until much later in life that she even spoke of the arrangement and allowed people to know she was even married to the veteran.
