Produced in 1956, the movie is 34 minutes long and was directed by Albert Lamorisse, who also wrote its screenplay. As of 2007, The Red Balloon is the only short film to win an Academy Award outside of the actual short film categories! Lamorisse also cast his children as actors in the flick - his son Pascal was chosen as the eponymous main character and his daughter Sabine played a little girl.
