Star Trek actors deliberately messed up scenes to force the network to air one of the first interracial kisses on TV!
In the Star Trek episode “Plato’s Stepchildren,” Captain Kirk and Uhura kiss. It was one of the first interracial kisses on network television, and the network considered it a risky. So risky, in fact that they ordered the show to film an alternate scene in which the actors did NOT kiss. William Shatner and Nichelle Nichols deliberately flubbed every take without the kiss in the scene, so the network would be forced to air the kissing scene.
In the scenes where they did not kiss, William Shatner ridiculously overacted to make shots unusable. The director kept insisting in getting a good non-kiss shot, so they complied; or so the director thought. The next day, when reviewing the footage shot the day before, they saw that William Shatner had crossed his eyes in a way that made the scene look so corny as to be unusable.
In the end, the only takes that were good to use were the kissing ones, and so that's how they aired. Despite NBCs concerns about a backlash in the deep south of the US, there was only 1 not-really-angry complaint about the episode.
