Singing “My Way” is banned at karaoke bars in the Philippines because it’s believed to cause violence.


Karaoke is an extremely popular pastime in the Philippines. It is found at bars and family gatherings alike. Filipinos pride themselves on their abilities to sing well, and they are very critical of people who sing poorly in karaoke bars. Despite the high expectations, hairdresser Rodolfo Gregorio is one of many people who sings to unwind. 

Gregorio, however, like many of the karaoke singers, will not sing the song “My Way” by beloved musician Frank Sinatra. In the Philippines, the song is surrounded by cases of violence and homicide as well as a heavy dose of superstition. The most likely cause of this added violence seems to be the pride of the Philippines people in their singing ability. 

Because “My Way” is such a well-known song, people know exactly how it is going to sounds and are angered by any deviations from the original version or any mistakes, however small.
