The creator of the show, Matt Groening, was born in Portland. Many parts of Springfield, the fictitious town the characters live in, are based on Portland.

The characters Ned Flanders and the Rev Timothy Lovejoy are named after streets in Portland. Springfield also reflects Portland in that it has a polluted river and a nuclear power plant.
