Kurt Cobain called Weird Al Yankovic a "musical genius."
Weird Al Yankovic decided that he wanted to make a parody of a Nirvana song. This was before Nirvana was as popular as they are now. Yankovic called Kurt Cobain asking permission to parody their song “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” Cobain was a bit nervous, fearing that the parody might be about food or something else ridiculous.
Yankovic assured him that it wouldn’t be about food, rather it would be about how people misunderstood Nirvana lyrics. It would be called “Smells like Nirvana.” When Nirvana first saw the parody, they broke out in laughter. The parody was hilarious and the band loved it. Dave Grohl, a member of the band, commented that he knew they had “made it” as a band after seeing Yankovic’s parody.
Kurt Cobain went a little further, calling Yankovic a “musical genius.” His lyrics were brilliantly written and satirical. Yankovic did several parodies including one of Dire Strait’s song “Money for Nothing.” His satirical song “White and Nerdy” was extremely popular on Youtube. Watch for yourself in the video below.
