The English heavy metal guitarist was born Saul Hudson in 1965. He’s best known as the lead guitarist for Guns N’ Roses. His parents were both artistic. His mom was a costume designer whose clients include David Bowies. His dad was an artist who created album covers for musicians like Neil Young and Joni Mitchell. His childhood was tumultuous to say the least.
When he was 35, he was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy, which is a form of congestive heart failure, caused by his years of using drugs and alcohol. He was given between six days and six weeks to live. He went through physical therapy and had a defibrillator implanted in his heart, and he recovered.
He’s been clean and sober since 2006 giving full credit to his wife, Perla. After his mother died of lung cancer in 2009, Slash quit smoking. He continues to play music and tour worldwide.
