Defibrillators are used to correct irregular heart rhythms, NOT to jump start flat lining hearts!

A defibrillator does not cause a sudden and violent jerk or convulsion like you see in movies and TV shows. It is used to actually stop the heart so that it can begin to beat regularly again.

A defibrillator doesn’t have the capability of jump starting a heart. If the heart has stopped, it needs immediate attention via intravenous medication or cardioversion.
