Cars 2 is the first Pixar film to receive a ‘rotten’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes!
For those of you that aren’t familiar with how Rotten Tomatoes works, here’s a brief explanation: The website keeps track of reviews for major film releases and calculates the percentage of generally positive reviews. If the positive reviews make up 60% or more, the film is considered ‘fresh,’ meaning that a qualified majority of the critics approve of it. The film is considered ‘rotten’ if the percentage of positive reviews cannot breach this threshold of 60%.
To show just how much of an anomaly a ‘rotten’ rating is for Pixar, look at their track record over the years:
Both Cars films are the only Pixar flicks to do worse than 91%, and the current sequel is rated nearly three times worse than all the rest of their movies! The studio looks to get back on track soon, as their 2012 film Brave looks promising. However, a recently announced prequel to Monsters, Inc. and Toy Story 4 make you wonder if the company will be able to continue to rekindle their magic by making sequels. Only time will tell...
