There was a dinosaur with sword-like fingers!

Therizinosaurus was first discovered in Mongolia and means “scythe lizard.” It was originally thought to belong to a turtle like reptile, yet it belongs to a genus of large theropod dinosaurs. They lived in the Cretaceous Period. There is no full body fossil of the Therizinosaurus, but scientists have a good feel for what it would look like based on other types of therizinosaurids.

They likely had small skulls on top of long necks and heavy, deep, broad bodies. They think their arms were up to eight feet long, too. Therizinosaurus’ weighed up to five tonnes. The thing that sets the Therizinosaurus apart from other theropod dinosaurs, and, well, most other dinosaurs was their hands. Each of their three fingers were actually massive claws.

These sword fingers were probably about 3 feet long. That is the longest claw known to exist on any animal. The claws were pretty straight and tapered off at the end into a sharp point, but the whole claw was very narrow and flat.
